Andy

Founder & Director

I started the Last Lamppost with a vision, I wanted to do whatever I could to save the hundreds of unwanted and mistreated dogs and puppies in New Zealand. If I could keep them all I would. But finding a loving home for them is just as rewarding, if not more so as adopting a dog or puppy is life changing for the new owners as well.

The team here work so hard to care for each one of the rescue dogs that come through our gates. They work round the clock for these pups and are passionate about finding a new family who are the right fit for them.

Louise

Shelter Manager

I have been Managing Last Lamppost Dog Rescue from March 2020 . I have the amazing opportunity of helping these beautiful dogs and puppies on the their journey to find their loving forever homes. They come into us for fostering from various degrees of neglect, abandonment, abuse and change of life circumstances requiring them to be rehomed.

It is a lot different from my 20 year career as a Travel Agent and 7 years running a fishing lodge in the South Pacific. This is where I rescued my first puppy pixie from a village. I grew up with every animal imaginable and took in strays. I am an animal lover through and through and give my all to every one that needs my help.

The most upsetting part of my job is that rescues should not have to exist to the extent they do in New Zealand. The animal neglect in this country is appalling and a focus on desexing and harsher penalties for animal abuse would be the best start to make change. Educating the children from school age may start to break the cycle for next generations. My next goal is to get help from other rescues and try change the animal welfare laws in New Zealand which will be a mammoth task.

Our Resident Pack.

  • Ned - The Major

Ned - an amazing fella that lives life chasing airplanes literally. He listens out for the planes taking off from Whenupai Airfield and works out what direction they are heading and chases them backwards and forwards all day long. Huge in Character and has had his fair share of operations etc and possibly due for some more if we can’t stop him chasing planes. Ned is a long term permanent resident.

  • Iggy - Lieutenant

Iggy is a staunch fella that loves hunting possums and climbing trees when he is not 20 metres behind Ned chasing planes. He loves swimming , jumping in the water , collecting as many sticks as possible. Iggy also came to us needing surgery from a broken leg. He loves Andy and often heads off to the office at Ponsonby. Long term resident.

  • Rosie - Aunty Rosie

Rosie’s story is horrific. No animal should ever of had to go through what she and her puppies went through at the neglect of human beings. She was emaciated, shut down and given up. She lost a couple of her puppies enroute to our Rescue. She has forgiven though and she is now happiest when she has her job to look after the young pups that come into the rescue. She helps us give them much needed socialisation skills that many don’t get as ripped from their mums way to early. Rosie will never leave us and she is a testament to how we can save, rehabilitate and show love again.

  • Pixie - Matron

Pixie is possibly the oldest in the pack at 7 1/2. She was rescued from a village in Vanuatu at 6 weeks old covered in fleas, ticks, burns and also had pavo. Pixie survived and came to live in New Zealand 2years ago travelling to New Zealand by boat. Pixie has a typical Island Dog attitude regarding her territory and does not appreciate dogs or puppies in her personal space. She is very good at teaching the young ones some social etiquette and is getting more patient day by day learning that she has to fit in with the residents and rescues and share her human and property. Her tennis ball and swimming are the two best things in life for Pixie..
